As well as general medical services for our patients, we are pleased to offer the following:
All nine partners are registered on the “obstetric list” and will, alongside our excellent team of midwives, provide care during your pregnancy.
Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease Management.
These clinics are nurse-led with further help by the doctors. They are designed to monitor and improve the care of your breathing problems, with advice on inhaler technique and medication dosing and timing. We also run a clinic aimed to support those of you wishing to stop smoking.
Baby/Child Health Care and Immunisations
In conjunction with the health visitors and practice nurses, we aim to ensure the well being of children up to the age of 5 years.
The doctor will carry out the “8 week check” in the surgery and the health visitor will monitor further development. Please feel free to discuss any worries or queries relating to childhood vaccinations. We currently encourage all parents to ensure their children are fully immunised.
We have a morning clinics purely for the taking of blood tests that run from Tuesday- Friday.
Cervical Smear Tests/Well Woman Clinics
Usually carried out by our practice nurses, this important screening test for ladies between the ages of 25 and 65 years of age is designed to pick up pre-cancerous changes to the neck of the womb, when treatment is relatively easy and simple. Other aspects of women’s health including pill checks, (contraceptive advice), HRT and menopause advice and dietary advice can be provided.
The practice nurses are trained in the specific needs of diabetic patients and alongside the doctors will offer regular advice and health assessment. Tight control of blood sugar is essential to reduce the risk of future diabetic complications.
Coronary Heart Disease Prevention
One of the biggest causes of illness and premature death in the country, this problem is at its worst in Merseyside and affects our practice area particularly. We will be happy to provide current advice on how best to reduce the risk for yourselves. The main risk groups are:
- diabetes mellitus
- family history
- high cholesterol
- high blood pressure
By targeting these problem areas, it is possible to significantly reduce your chances of heart attacks and strokes.
We have a trained counsellor to whom you may be referred. If you feel that this service may be appropriate to you please consult one of the doctors.
Citizen’s Advice Bureau Officer
We have fortnightly access at the surgery to a representative from Birkenhead CAB. They will be able to give you impartial advice as to benefits available and many other issues relating to you.
Family Planning/Reproductive Health Care
We offer a Family Planning clinic for coils and implant fitting/removal by appointment.
Each year the Department of Health advises us which groups of people should be recommended to have a ‘flu jab. The current recommendations include:-
- All ages with Chronic Heart Disease
- Chronic Respiratory Disease (including asthma)
- Chronic Kidney Disease
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Immunosuppression due to disease/treatment
- All patients aged 65 years or over
- All patients living in long stay Residential/Nursing Homes.
We currently offer finger prick testing with Warfarin dosing.
Treatments for: excision of some moles; and certain ‘lumps and bumps’, can be arranged following assessment by the doctors.
Health checks for patients aged over 75 are available by prior arrangement.
